With the High Seas line this brewery has improved significantly. A line of well crafted, higher alcohol brews has made Hugh Sisson once again prove his prowess in this industry. Wonderful tour one Saturday a month is a little crowded, but worth the trip as Hugh gives it himself and samples are abundant. Definitly give any of the beers in the High Seas line a try.

I did not visit the brewery, but did try several of their beers at other Baltimore beer bars while in town. All were very good. I really enjoyed the Uber Pils.

The godfather of Maryland microbrews, Hugh Sisson, was our tour guide as we went on a guided tour of his brewery. Most impressive; learned a lot and enjoyed sampling the Clipper City line. Gold Ale is my favorite, but all were excellent. Took home a sampler pack of Raspberry Wheat, Pale Ale, Gold Ale & McHenry to enjoy at home. If you haven't gone on this tour yet, you owe it to yourself. It's a treat.

Most of Clipper City's offerings are terrific enough (although somewhat tame compared to what it's competing with for my beer dollars), but the 2002 Winter Reserve Ale smacked a surprise grand slam home run--a terrific strong ale, delightfully hoppy but not obscenely so, alleged to be 6.5% but the draft seems to be far higher. Think in terms of a good harvest strong ale. Too bad almost none is making its way to the stores in bottles; if you spy it, grab it!

One of the best brewery tours I've been to.The brewmaster was very friendly and informative about the brewing process.I had a chance to sample all the types of beer they had at the time and was really impressed by how great they all tasted. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone in the Baltimore area with an intrest in how top of the line microbrews are made.

It should be noted that the review dated 1/9/2001 from the guy in Harrisburg sounds more like he was reviewing Capital City, which is a brewpub in the Inner Harbor. You, of course, are reading about Cliper City, the micro that makes an outstanding lineup of lagers and ales. Cheers!

Overall this place is great. I'm not usually a fan of chain breweries, but this one didn't feel like a cookie cutter establishment. The beer is excellent, with many choices to choose from. Bring an appettite because the food is superb and the portions are huge. Don't forget to bring huge portions of money too, this place is a bit pricey.

Enjoyed another tour for the introduction of the Octoberfest beer. It's good, but supplies are limited. I'm told that Hugh Sisson was featured in one of the local brewspapers explaining the upcoming changes to the product line. Part of this will be the end of the Porter and Irish Stout, so find the Porter while you can. Some new contract brewing: Gold Ale bottled for Brew Thru and OBX stores in the Outer Banks of North Carolina; dry-hopped Oxford Class available under a house label at John Stevens in Baltimore's Fells Point; Blue Point, a soon-to-come Long Island based brewer; and, DuClaw, for a new venue that I think will be closer to Baltimore than their Bel Air location.

I stopped in for a tour and tasting a week ago. The last of the Winter Ale was still outstanding, as was the Irish Style Stout. Hugh Sisson mentioned that the IPA is changing to a hoppier beer, more in the California style than the actual English style.

Twenty of us from the http://www.ColumbiaSkiClub.org/">Columbia Ski Club had a great time touring the Clipper City brewery on Saturday, November 20. In the absence of proprietor Hugh Sisson, brewer Matt Menke, who joined Clipper City with its acquisition of Oxford Brewing, took good care of us. The highlight of the tour, naturally, was sampling the beers on tap: - Clipper City Reserve Winter Ale lives up to Hugh Sisson's promise of "a huge beer, deep amber, bronze in color, with alcohol by volume in excess of 6%, and more hops than any other beer we make." (I haven't had a chance to try the bottle conditioned version, or the just-returned Clipper City Porter.)
- Ipswich IPA, contract-brewed for Ipswich Brewing of Massachusetts, is a nice, mildly-hopped ale (Clipper City Reserve IPA is more hoppy).
- Clipper City Chesapeake Gold Ale and Clipper City Chesapeake Lager are good versions of more mass-market styles.
Matt related that adjusting the Oxford brews to the larger Clipper City plant wasn't too difficult, though subtle differences in the beers might be discernable (I haven't noticed). Looking forward (if I caught this part of the conversation right), larger volume purchasing may allow for more raspberry puree to be used in making the Oxford Raspberry Wheat, while the use of Ipswich's yeast may make for an improved Oxford Class Ale. Clipper City Chesapeake Amber Ale is the same as Oxford Class Ale. Clipper City Chesapeake Gold Ale has also been available this year as "KML Ale" as part of a local radio station promotion. Matt may have said (or I may have misunderstood) that Clipper City Chesapeake Lager is the same beer that is contract-brewed for The Weeping Radish in North Carolina to be their Corolla Gold. "The Raven" lager, contract-brewed for Baltimore-Washington Beer Works and available locally, may not be brewed again. Though Matt (and Hugh, previously) spoke well of its quality, the one-man operation has had distributor and marketing problems. I guess Lew "Pennsylvania Breweries" Bryson heard the same thing from Hugh that I did on an earlier visit: Clipper City's seasonal Maibock won't be brewed anymore because of low sales. "People didn't know what it was," Hugh said.

Possibly Maryland's most underrated brewery. Hugh Sisson thinks a lot about his beer and the brewing industry, and he is a great guy to talk to about it; very knowledgeable, wryly witty, and willing to tell you whatever you want to know. His beers are great, from the flagship Chesapeake Gold (just had this at an O's game, delish stuff) to the whip-cracking hoplash of the Winter Reserve Ale. And I want ALL of you to apologize for not buying enough of CC's great Maibock!

Hugh Sisson gives a good tour. It was a pleasure to discuss beer and the microbrewery business with him. Clipper City's e-mail address is clipper1@ix.netcom.net

Hugh has given my group 2 tours so far, each one terrific. His beer is very good, maybe the best in area. He is very hospitable, takes pride in showing you around. Every beer fancier should stop in and say hello.

Take the tour. Hugh Sisson took us through the brewery the day I visited. Learned a lot about what it takes to make good beer.
